Tigers Trade Grandy, Jackson For 4 Players in 3 Team Deal

December 8th, 2009 | by jelletlambie |

To be clear from the get go this post is simply designed to list the relevant facts of the trade between the Tigers, Yankees and Diamondbacks that will be officially announced soon according to multiple reports. Analysis and insight on the players involved will come soon in a separate post. For the record the proposed deal is not yet final, although medical records seem to be the only thing standing in the way, which seemingly are in order, but we’ll see.

The Tigers will get: Max Scherzer, Austin Jackson, Phil Coke and Daniel Schlereth.

The Diamondbacks will get: Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy

The Yankees will get: Curtis Granderson

let’s take a look at each player en route to Detroit for the record….

Max Scherzer, 25 years old, 6′3″, 215 lbs, right handed pitcher (starter). The 11th overall pick in the 2006 draft by the Diamondbacks. Through 46 MLB games he is 9-15 with a 3.86 ERA in 226.1 innings pitched. Used as a starter and reliever in Arizona he projects to be a front line starter with a big fastball. His 240 K’s in the majors support that. His 84 walks indicate control is not a big issue at this point. Fantasy baseball veterans have had his name on their lips since his big league debut in ‘08.

Austin Jackson, 22 years old, 6′1″, 185 lbs, bats and throws right, outfielder drafted by the Yankees in the 8th round of the 2005 draft. No big league experience, although he has played 565 games in the minors, most recently with AAA Scranton/Wilkes Barre. Career minor league splits are .288/.356/.410/.766. Jackson has 30 career minor league home runs and 124 steals. He has struck out more than 100 times in each of his full minor league seasons. He boasts a .987 career fielding % with 10 errors and 17 assists.

Phil Coke, 27 years old, 6′1″, 210 lbs, left handed pitcher drafted by the Yankees in the 26th round of the 2002 draft. Used as a reliever by the Yankees Coke started 77 of 125 minor league games he appeared in. At the big league level he has a 5-3 record with a 3.74 ERA in 74.2 innings pitched. In that time he has accrued 49 K’s and 20 BB’s. His career MLB whip is 0.991 – in the minors that number was 1.337. It’s too early to tell what the Tigers plan for him would be, although he could work in the rotation or the bullpen, or both.

Daniel Schlereth, 23 years old, 6′0″, 210 lbs, left handed pitcher drafted by the Diamondbacks with the 26th overall pick in the 2008 draft. Reached the big leagues quickly (May 2009) and compiled a 1-4 mark with a 5.89 ERA in 18.1 innings over 21 appearances, all in relief. In that time he fanned 22 and walked 15. Pitched only 39.2 innings in the minors prior to his promotion, was 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA from A to AAA. 60 strike outs and 23 walks in his minor league career. He is raw and lacks experience but has a big left arm and has earned high praise from scouts. Son of former NFL player Mark Schlereth.

I’ll have a complete breakdown including my thoughts and analysis on this big trade soon.

Today I folded up my wife’s Granderson jersey to get it out of our closet and out of sight for a little while. When I purchased it before the 2007 season I assured her that his name would be safe on a Tiger Jersey for a long time, maybe throughout his career. At this point bitter feelings outweigh logic and reason. Perhaps this move will help the team, but right now it feels like Curtis was the latest victim of bad investments and free spending. The Tigers need to save money, really? I never thought that was an issue when I ventured into a very crowded ballpark several times this fall. Is it the economy or the millions of dollars paid out to bench warmers and guys not even on the team? Time could reveal this to be a great move, but right now we are already missing Curtis. This one stings.

I had Scherzer on my fantasy team in 2008 and 2009, he never quite lived up to the enormous hype but I think the kid is due for a breakout season.
