Random Statistics To Get You Through The Weekend
August 20th, 2009 | by jelletlambie |I’m headed up north for the weekend, but before I depart I thought I’d leave you with some statistics to chew on. Enjoy your weekend, wherever you may be.
New Tiger Aubrey Huff is a considerably better hitter in the second half of the season than in the first, as his career splits indicate:
1st half: .271/.331/.445/.776, 92 HR’s, 363 RBI’s in 668 games
2nd half: .298/.354/.510/.864, 109 HR’s, 376 RBI’s in 606 games
Also inspiring, at least on paper, are his career numbers against the Tampa Bay Rays, where he played for six and a half seasons. Against the Rays Huff is .301/.357/.603/.959 with 11 HR’s and 27 RBI’s in 156 at-bats. The Tigers play the Rays seven times yet this season.
The Tigers are 19-19 in one run games this season. In those 38 games the Tigers have scored 134 total runs, the same exact number as their opponents.
The 2009 Tigers have scored three runs or less 53 times through their first 119 games. The 2008 Tigers scored three runs or less 60 times in 162 contests.
Brandon Inge has committed 14 errors in 1,004 innings played this season, accounting for 18.9% of the team total of 74.
Adam Everett is next with 12 errors (in 713 innings), accounting for 16.2%.
In third place? Ryan Raburn, with 8 errors in 400 innings played. He accounts for almost 11% of the teams errors, despite playing in only 71 of the Tigers 119 games played entering Thursday.
Entering todays game the Tigers had three pitchers ranked among the top 10 in the AL in ERA (Verlander, Jackson and Washburn). The last time three players from the same team were among the top 10 at the end of a season was the 2005 Florida Marlins, headlined by Dontrelle Willis.
The 2006 Tigers had four of the top 14 in the AL in ERA – Verlander, Kenny Rogers, Nate Robertson and Jeremy Bonderman.
Curtis Granderson has a .338 on-base % – which is good for 13th among qualifying center fielders this season. He ranks 19th in batting average amongst his peers.
Miguel Cabrera is hitting .335 entering todays action, best among MLB first basemen. He ranks 5th amongst his counterparts in OPS.
Tigers pitchers have recorded 838 strike outs through the first 119 games of the season. The club record for K’s in a season is 1,115 by the 1968 team.
Which means the 2009 Tigers need to strike out 278 hitters in the final 43 games to set the new franchise record, which equals 6.46 K’s per game. To date the pitching staff has averaged 7.04 K’s per game.
