Tigers Trade for Jhonny Peralta

After the blockbuster moves involving Cliff Lee and Dan Haren in the past weeks, many believed those were foreshadowing a big trade deadline.  That may still be the case, but if so it will have to happen in the next three and a half days.  The Tigers and Indians have made an intra-division trade to get the ball rolling in this deadline week.  Desperate a competent bat, the Tigers acquired third baseman Jhonny Peralta from their division mates for a young minor league lefthander named Giovanni Soto.

Tigers Drawing Well on Radio and TV

The Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal published a report on audience figures for radio and television so far this year.  The story at the top is that the Boston Red Sox are set to drop out of first place for the first time in six years.  This of course proves how much of a bandwagon fan base the nauseating Red Sox Nation is because the Sox stumbled out of the gate and haven’t been able to get a roll this year because of a disgusting rash of injuries reminiscent of the Mets from 2009.

Revisiting the Granderson Trade

Four months?  Who had four months?  Please claim your prize in the “When Will Yankees Fans Turn on Granderson?” Pool if you had four months.  One of my good Twitter friends, meaning we’re good friends on Twitter, I don’t know her in real life or else I’m sure it’d just be my good friend, anyway, I disgress… one of my good virtual friends Amanda Rykoff (@amandarykoff) happens to be a diehard Yankees fan.  I don’t hold this against her at all, but when the trade broke one of my first tweets about it was to her saying that she would love Granderson.

Saturday Night’s NOT Alright

What the hell was Gene Lamont thinking?  Let’s forget for a second that it had absolutely the worst possible outcome ever, why would he send a hobbled Magglio Ordonez home to try and push for the tie in the third inning of the game?  Especially when the Tigers would have had 2nd and 3rd with two outs and Brennan Boesch coming up?  I know Boesch is slumping a bit, but that is just a completely idiotic play even before you get to the gut-wrenching conclusion that is Ordonez’s broken ankle.

Streak Chart

On the heels of the seven game losing streak, I decided to put together a graph that shows the various winning and losing streaks of the season thus far.  Seven is the top mark on both ends with the winning streak coming just over a month ago in mid-June.  Apart from that, there have been a pair of five game winning streaks and a four gamer, but then just twos and ones.  On the losing end, the  longest streak prior to the recent seven game skid was a four gamer.  There were a pair of threes, but otherwise the team has done a really good job avoiding of getting stuck in losing streaks.

Third Base Addendum

One thing I didn’t include yesterday when discussing options for the Tigers at the third base was Scott Sizemore coming up and playing the hot corner.  The main reason I didn’t include it is because I didn’t realize he was making the move.  My bad on that one.  It initially crossed my mind when Inge got hurt that he could be brought up to play second and Carlos Guillen could move to third, but then they called up superawesome Casey Fien so I figured they were going a different direction.  Then Sizemore played third for Toledo and popped a home run drawing some of attention.  Then news today came out that he was being called up while Fien was being sent back down.  S2 is hitting .329 thanks to a 9-game hitting streak and the home run was his 6th of the season.  So far, demotions have worked for Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello, can Sizemore benefit?

Unlucky Number Seven

As I mentioned yesterday, I originally planned to just stay up late and put together this piece to discuss the struggles of the ballclub, but in the end I was just too ticked off to gather all of my thoughts and put them together coherently and rationally.  So I slept on it then worked through the day all the while jotting down various notes as they came to mind.

Yeah, No.

I was going to stay up late and put together a big post about tonight and the last week or so, but I’m just not in proper mindframe. I’m so angry with the club right now. Not beat my dog angry or anything psychotic like that. I’m just pissed at how they are playing while the Chicago White Sox surge. At any rate, I, and you as the reader, would benefit significantly from a post written after a good night’s rest.

Minor League Prospect Update: Pitchers

It has been a while since I took a look at how the highest regarded arms in the system were doing.  To determine who the highest regarded arms in the system were, I went off of John Sickels’ Top 20 prospect list from the winter.  I really like what Sickels does over at Minorleagueball.com so I’m comfortable relying on him for a good look at the team’s future.
